Since the CFL was forced to miss the entirety of its 2020 season due to covid, many have been itching to watch the CFL return. Earlier this year, the league rocked the football world when they announced that they’d be working with the XFL on a possible partnership. Since then, we haven’t learned much more than there’s NDA’s in place.
During the CFL/XFL talks, the league has also been focused on returning in 2021. Last month the CFL announced they would target August 5th as a return date, but did leave room open to shift the season if needed.
Today, TSN’s Dave Naylor reveals the league has reached out to the CFL Players Association to let them know that a commitment on an August 5th start will come no later than June 14th.
The @CFL has informed its players association that a commitment to an Aug 5th start will come no later than June 14th, which is consistent with the leagues public commitment to a mid-June decision. #CFL

This falls in line with CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie’s comments when they revealed the August 5th date. At the time, he said that the league would know more around mid-June, based on the trajectory of the covid pandemic. Now that we’re in June, it’s nice to see some confirmation.
This doesn’t mean that the CFL is definitely returning Aug 5th, but news should be coming soon on the matter.
