Panthers Expected to Sign Houston Roughnecks WR Cam Phillips

Former Houston Roughnecks WR Cam Phillips Signed by CFL’s Toronto Argonauts

The 2021 CFL season is right around the corner, and we’re seeing teams working to build their final rosters. Just yesterday former Houston Roughnecks wide receiver Cam Phillips was released by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, but it didn’t take long for him to find a new spot.

Just now, John Hodge of 3DownNation reports that Phillips is now headed to Toronto to join the Argonauts.

During the 2020 XFL season, there was no team hotter than the Houston Roughnecks. Led by league-leading quarterback PJ Walker, the team went 5-0 on the shortened season.

One of Walker’s favorite targets was wide receiver Cam Phillips. Earlier this year Phillips was signed by the NFL’s Carolina Panthers, where he would join his former teammate. But, the reunion didn’t last long, when Phillips was ultimately cut from the main roster.

Cam Phillips was drafted in the sixth round of the inaugural XFL Draft by the Houston Roughnecks. In the Roughnecks’ first game against the Los Angeles Wildcats, Phillips helped score a 50-yard touchdown, giving the Roughnecks their first points and helping the team win a 37–17 victory against the Wildcats.

In what turned out to be the final week of the XFL season, Phillips hauled in 10 receptions for 122 yards and 2 touchdowns. He again earned Player of the Week for his performance. Phillips finished the XFL season with 31 receptions for a league high 455 yards and 9 touchdowns.
