Last week we reported that former St. Louis BattleHawks quarterback Jordan Ta’amu was invited to join a minicamp for Washington Football Team. Interestingly enough, WFT is also home to his former backup Taylor Heinicke who secured a multi-year contract after a stellar playoff performance against Tom Brady and the Buccs.
Once the minicamp concluded on Friday, Ta’amu met with the media. He started the discussion by talking about how he came across this opportunity in Washington.
“I was in Nashville training and then just like a week ago the Chiefs had to let me go due to numbers, draft picks, free agents,” Ta’amu said. “And a couple of days later I get a phone call from my agent, and then from the people from [Washington], the coaches saying they want me to come down for the weekend, or however long it takes, but they wanted me to come down and work out with them. So I told them yes, it’s another opportunity for me to get better and get my name out there more. So it’s great to be here.”
While speaking to reporters, Ta’amu was asked what it was like for the two BattleHawks quarterbacks joining up again in the NFL.
“I sent him a picture, I was like, ‘I’m in your hometown,” Ta’amu said. “He was just laughing and saying welcome home or whatever. Me and him go way back, he’s a good guy.”
Ta’amu threw for 1,050 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions over five games during the XFL’s shortened season. Despite being the youngest QB in the league, he became the second XFL quarterback to earn an NFL contract. Second only to Houston Roughnecks QB PJ Walker, who signed with the Carolina Panthers last March.
According to Ta’amu, Heinecke played a pivotal role in his development as a quarterback while they were teammates in St. Louis.
“It was awesome,” Ta’amu said of playing with Heinecke. “I mean, me and him in the same quarterback room, he helped me grow as a quarterback. He knew the game, he does have experience, and he’s older so he kind of, he’s kind of like an older brother to me. So he kind of got me through that offense and showed me the ropes a little bit and helped me.”
