The United States Football League (USFL) is slated to return in 2022 with FOX coming in as a minority owner. Currently, the league is in the works of working with the city of Birmingham, Al to host it’s inaugural season.
At the moment, the league is targeting a 10-week season which would kickoff April 15th. The playoffs would include two semi-final matchups with the Championship taking place July 3rd.
If this timeline is correct, that leaves the USFL with roughly five months to get everything up and running. One of those key components is players.
When more news came out about the USFL’s plans last week, one former NFL quarterback seemed to be open to the idea. Former Denver Broncos QB Chad Kelly tweeted out “USFL 2022!!!”.

Could this be a sign of things to come? Only time will tell. If you ask me, Kelly would be a perfect fit for the new league.
We should also mention, Chad Kelly is the nephew of former USFL MVP Jim Kelly.
Since being cut by the Broncos in 2018, Kelly has spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and he’s worked out for several teams, including the Cleveland Browns and Green Bay Packers.
Last year FOX aired The Spring League, which was the first time every game had been televised for the league. With the relaunch of the USFL, it looks as if FOX is stepping up its efforts in the spring football arena.
Beyond FOX, it’s reported that the USFL will split its season between FS1, NBC and USA as well. If this comes to fruition, this is great news for the USFL.
The USFL recently opened its online store, which may give us some hints at some of the teams that will be returning. As of this writing, the store features the Philadelphia Stars, Pittsburgh Maulers, Birmingham Stallions and New Orleans Breakers.
As we mentioned before, there’s not much time before the scheduled kickoff, we we’d expect to start hearing more news more frequently.
