Going into this year it was expected that we’d hear a rapid fire of announcements from the USFL. Needless to say, they have not disappointed. Since the new year kicked off we’ve heard a lot more about the leagues plans for the upcoming season, headlined by all eight head coaches.
At the moment, all eyes are on the USFL player selection meeting slated for later this month. During the event, each coach will build out their roster for the upcoming season. Although the head coach has the final say, you can expect that they’ll be leaning on the expertise of their surrounding staff.
Since the coaches have been revealed, we’ve even see a few names pop up in regards to coaching staffs.
First, it was Philadelphia Stars head coach Bart Andrus dropping a few names during an interview with Dan Sileo. Then, Pittsburgh Maulers head coach Kirby Wilson told TribLive that Jarren Horton would be coming on to serve as defensive coordinator with Wilson taking on the offensive calls.
It looks like Mike Riley doesn’t want to get too far behind his northern counterparts. @NewsUSFL on Twitter reports that the New Jersey Generals have made some staffing hires as well.
Generals coaching staff update:

First up is Jay Locey, who is set to serve as the teams tight-ends and running backs coach.
Locey brings many years of coaching experience to the team, and has a storied past with the Generals head coach. During his playing days at Corvallis High School, he was teammates with Mike Riley. Locey has held many positions in high school and collegiate coaching, most notably serving as wide receivers coach for Oregon from 2006-14.
Additionally, Jeff McInerney will join as the defensive line and special teams coach. He’s no newcomer to the spring football market. McInerney most recently held the position of special teams coach for the New York Guardians of the XFL. Prior to that he was defensive-line/special teams coach for the San Antonio Commanders of the short-lived AAF under Mike Riley. Beyond those accolades, he brings nearly 40-years of coaching experience to the Generals.
In our opinion, these are great hires. Both have a wide scope of experience, and a personal connection to the man in charge.
As we creep closer to the player selection meeting, we expect to hear more news around coaching staff hires.
