Before the second coming of the XFL announced their host cities there was a lot of speculation that Birmingham, Alabama would be one of the locations. Even after the eight cities were revealed, there was hope that Birmingham may see a team if the league decided to expand.
The last professional football team to play in Birmingham was in 2019 with The Iron of the now defunct AAF (Alliance of American Football).
According to WBRC, now that the XFL is under new ownership Birmingham City Council President William Parker said he is asking for a meeting with the new XFL leadership to try and bring a franchise to Alabama. The idea would be to play at Legion Field, which seats up to 70,000 fans.
“Over the years, we’ve worked hard to position Birmingham as a sports destination,” President Parker said. “By having the XFL at Legion Field, we’d be able to keep major sporting events at the historic stadium year round since the league plays in the spring. I will be reaching out to the leadership at the XFL to schedule meetings in which we can discuss the ways that both the league and Birmingham can mutually benefit from this exciting new venture.”
Although it doesn’t seem like expansion is in the cards for the XFL initially, new co-owner Dany Garcia has hinted at the possibility of expansion in the future. Another possibility is that when the league does return to play in their host cities, Birmingham could be top of the list for relocation.
Overall, this is great news for the XFL and their new owners. This shows that there is still a lot of interest in bringing the XFL into new markets.
