Johnny Manziel recently said that he’d be interesting in joining one of the Texas XFL franchises. Last week the league had announced its first signing in Landry Jones. Commissioner luck has stated that 7 more tier 1 quarterbacks will be hired of the next few weeks.
If Manziel is interested in playing for one of the teams in Texas, it seems one option is already off the table. SportsDay caught up with Renegades Director of Player Personnel Daryl Johnston and asked him about Johnny Football. Johnston said, “I passed on him in San Antonio and I’d pass on him again here,”. Johnston first had the opportunity to sign Manziel to the San Antonio franchise in the now-defunct Alliance of American Football.
“For me the chemistry in the locker room is critical, and especially the quarterback position. He kind of sets the tone, especially for the offensive side of the ball, but really for the whole team. There is so much added responsibility that goes with the face, goes with the voice of the franchise. And I haven’t seen that from Johnny on a consistent basis that I would feel comfortable committing to him.”
We’re still about a month and a half out from the XFL Draft, and there’s still questions on how the tier 1 QBs will be handled. I still think that we’ll see Johnny Manziel in the XFL, and if the league does decide to assign the T1 QBs, I think we’ll likely see him with the Roughnecks in Houston. Some fans will love it, some will hate it; but if he plays well and wins games he will be the hero of Houston football.
