Yesterday we learned that the Detroit Lions hosted former St. Louis BattleHawks quarterback Jordan Ta’amu for a visit in the aftermath of Matthew Stafford’s rib injury per the league’s transaction wire.
Stafford is dealing with a rib cartilage injury, and according to reports the team isn’t feeling optimistic about him playing this weekend. The veteran quarterback hasn’t been ruled out, and it sure sounds like the team will give him every chance to see if he can play, though. Chase Daniel has served as Stafford’s primary backup while second-year quarterback David Blough has mostly been inactive, protected on the practice squad.
“We’re going to use all the resources that we have at our disposal, which is the athletic training staff, we have doctors, and then obviously, he’ll have a big say in how he’s feeling,” Bevell said. “We’ll look at the test with our eyes. We’ll see how he’s performing. But it’ll be, basically, performance-based, and if he’s going to be able to function at a high enough level, one, to perform well, and two, to be able to protect himself.
Detroit hosted Ta’amu for a visit earlier this season as well, which came on the heels of Stafford landing on the COVID list during his false-positive fiasco. Ta’amu was last spotted on Kansas City’s practice squad after a successful stint in the XFL. He was a standout for The BattleHawks, not to mention during his two seasons at Ole Miss.
Ta’amu started 19 games in the SEC, throwing 30 touchdowns to 12 interceptions on a 64.5% completion rate, adding 10 rushing touchdowns. Ta’amu picked up where he left off for the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks, throwing for 1,050 yards with five touchdowns and two picks in five games. He added 217 rushing yards and another score on the ground.
Just now we’re learning that The Detroit Lions have pulled the trigger on Ta’amu, signing him to the teams practice squad.

It’s great to see Ta’amu get a chance to continue his development on an NFL team. If there’s ever a team that needed help, Detroit would be the prime location. We’ll keep you posted as more information comes out on the signing.
