Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s ‘Young Rock’ has been renewed for a second season. Deadline reports that NBC has renewed their Tuesday night block of comedy, featuring ‘Young Rock’ and ‘Kenan.’
‘Young Rock’ features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and tells the story of his life, from growing up as the son of professional wrestler Rocky Johnson. Johnson also makes an appearance on each episode, showcasing his fictitious run for President.
Interestingly enough, Uli Latukefu, who plays Johnson in his college years has been tapped for his upcoming ‘Black Adam’ film.
NBC noted that ‘Young Rock’ is the #1 new comedy of the season n the 18-49 key demographic, and that the pilot episode was seen by 13.4 million viewers. It was also said that the show is NBC’s top comedy debut across all digital platforms on record through 60 days with 3.6 million digital views.
The digital aspect is huge, streaming is leading the market and will soon overtake traditional over-the-air viewing.
With The Rock now a key figure behind the XFL, you can’t help but feel hopeful for the future. Dwayne Johnson doesn’t go into projects he can’t be successful at. With a hit TV show on his resume, it could help boost the XFL’s chances of getting a new TV deal. We’ve heard that FOX is still interested in the XFL, but with Johnson’s connections at NBC we could see another contender.
In another story of things coming full-circle, the XFL debuted on NBC back in 2001. Although the season started out hot, the network didn’t want anything to do with the league at the end of the year. But, with the re-invention of the XFL in 2020 and The Rock now part of the new ownership group, that could all change.
Beyond NBC, the network also boasts it’s Peacock streaming app, which is also the new home of the WWE Network. Peacock is looking to boost it’s new app, which new channels like G4 being added in the near future. Could the XFL fit into something like that? I think so.
‘Young Rock’ is produced by Universal Television, Seven Bucks Productions and Fierce Baby Productions, with some assistance by WWE Studios. Rock, Nahnatchka Khan, Jeff Chiang, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras all served as executive producers on season one.
