K Garrett Hartley Waived by Seattle Dragons

It was just not too long ago that we learned Garrett Hartley would be joining the Seattle Dragons. Shortly after the final 52-man rosters have been announced, news has come out that Hartley has been waived.

Hartley has since publicly commented on the issue via Instagram stating that he wasn’t medically cleared by the Dragons. This all stems from past spine injuries. His doctors have said that he is ready to play, but the XFL’s doctors did not agree.

This puts the Dragons in a tough position with only 10 days left until kickoff. The team is out a kicker, and there are reports that former San Diego State Kicker, Donny Hageman has been called in for a tryout. Another possibility is that the team re-signs Cole Tracy who worked with the team throughout the training camp.

Hartley was signed by the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2008. Later that year he became the placekicker for the New Orleans Saints, for whom he set an NFL record (now surpassed) for most consecutive successful field goals to start a career, and then became the first kicker in NFL history to convert three field goals of more than 40 yards in the Super Bowl. He also has some other XFL ties, Hartley played college football at under Bob Stoops at Oklahoma.

It’s unfortunate to see him waived from the Dragons, and we hope to see him land on a team in the future.
