Landry Jones Leads the Dallas Renegades over the LA Wildcats 25-18

Sunday’s first game of the day had The Dallas Renegades traveling to Dignity Health Sports Complex to battle the Los Angeles Wildcats. Going into this team, both franchises were looking to secure their first win.

There were a lot of eyes on Los Angeles after the events that took place after their first game… and first loss. Coach Moss made some instant adjustments, including parting ways with Pepper Johnson and trading defensive captain, Anthony Johnson to the Defenders in exchange for Bradley Sylve.

Both Dallas and Los Angeles had their first starts with their tier 1 quarterbacks in this game. For Dallas, Landry Jones was getting the start after a leg injury he sustained in the off-season. In the corner for LA was Josh Johnson, who some feel may not be 100% ready.

Regardless, Dallas and Los Angeles were hoping that this change may be enough to spark their offence and get that first W of the season.

The first quarter started off slow, going scoreless; as did much of the second. It wasn’t until 2:54 left in the half that The Wildcats were able to get within field goal position, with Nick Novak making the successful 47-yard attempt, putting them up 3-0.

With time running out, Dallas was also able to move themselves down the field enough to get into scoring position. Ultimately, the Renegades settled for the field goal with 11 second left in the half. Austin MacGinnis, the sole scorer in last week’s game made the 41-yard field goal, tying the game 3-3 going into the half.

Clearly, both teams were hoping to have a little more offense on the field, but there was still a whole half left in this match-up.

The third quarter seemed to much of the same. The only points coming off a 45-yard Renegades field goal, giving them a slim 6-3 lead.

The fourth quarter something changed for both teams, with the first win of the season on the line they went both started making some moves.

To start out the scoring action, we saw Josh Johnson get his first touchdown, with a shotgun pass to Nelson Spruce, once again putting them on top 9-6. Coach moss opted for the 1-point conversion, but the Wildcats we’re unable to secure the extra points.

Landry Jones and the Dallas Renegades, not wanting to get too far behind moved the ball down the field convincingly. In a league where the run game is hard to get off the ground, Cameron Artis-Payne made it look easy, driving the ball 21-yards for his first touchdown of the season. Bob Stoops attempted a 1-pt conversion, with Artis-Payne securing the extra points as well, giving his team a 13-9 lead with 8:52 left in the game.

Los Angeles couldn’t produce on their next drive, which put Dallas back in the driving seat. After a few solid runs from Lance Dunbar, Jones was able to get his first passing touchdown of the season, sending it to Parham to secure the six. They were unsuccessful on the 1-point conversion, but they extended their lead to 19-9.

Los Angeles, knowing time was running out, wasted none getting the ball into the end-zone. Josh Johnson threw a 44-yard touchdown to Nelson Spruce. Coach Moss attempted a three-point conversion, which was successful via a pass to Jennings. The Wildcats were now within 1, 19-18 with only 4:37 on the clock.

Dallas came into this drive wanting to close out the game. Ultimately, they were able to hammer the final nail via another Artis-Payne Touchdown. Although the Renegades couldn’t convert the extra point, their 25-18 lead was enough for them to close out the game.

Dallas accomplished what they were looking to do. Get their first win now that Landry Jones was at the helm. Los Angeles on the other hand will look to go back to the drawing board in preparation of next weeks match-up against arguable the best team in the league; the DC Defenders.
