We’re just a few days out from the first XFL Summer Showcase in Dallas. Every day leading up to the event we’re learning more and more staff members from all across the league. Today we’re hearing news out of DC, with a list of hires by Head Coach/General Manager Pep Hamilton.
Via the Official Twitter account of XFL DC, we’re learning that Bob Saunders will be joining on as WR Asst, Christopher Scelfo as OL Asst, Kurt Gouveia as LB Asst and Sigismondo Cioffi as DB Asst.
Saunders previously served as an Offensive Assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, and St. Louis Rams. He also served two seasons as wide receivers coach in the United Football League with the Virginia Destroyers.
Scelfo was most recently the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator for the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football, having previously served in a similar position with the Houston Cougars and Charlotte 49ers. Scelfo also previously served as the tight ends coach for the Atlanta Falcons. He’s also served as head coach at Tulane from 1998 to 2006, including in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and amassed a 37–57 record. Scelfo is the only Tulane head coach to have won two bowl games.
Gouveia is the third XFL alumni to join the league, previously playing as Linebacker for the Las Vegas Outlaws. He played 13 seasons in the National Football League and one season in the XFL. During his career, he played for the Washington Redskins (1986–1994; 1999), the Philadelphia Eagles (1995), and the San Diego Chargers (1996–1998).
Cioffi has spent time with the Browns as Defensive Backs coach. Prior to his time with the Browns, Cioffi coached the defensive backs for the Arizona Cardinals in 2011 and 2012. Cioffi’s unit helped the Arizona defense lead the NFL in passer rating defense (71.2) and interception percentage (4.4%) in 2012. This same group also ranked second in interceptions (22), second in third-down efficiency (32.9%), fourth in takeaways (33), and fifth in passing yards allowed (200.8).
