Talks End Between CFL and XFL — No Partnership For Now

Earlier this year the football world was rocked by the announcement that the CFL and XFL were talking about a possible collaboration. Since then, the rumor mill has gone wild.

Some thought there would be a full on merger, others eluded to inter-divisional play to even just an all-star game. Well, we finally have some news that from an official source; the CFL.

Today the CFL has stated that the talks are now complete between the two leagues, and as of now there are no plans to work together at the moment.

This is great news for some fans, and many are saddened to hear it. Now we’ll never know how the two leagues would settle the 3 vs 4-down war. How about the field sizes… Yep, the dream is gone for now.

But, the CFL seemingly left the door open and said that the talks went well. At the moment their main focus is their August 5th return.

Since then, the XFL has released a statement of their own as well.

While our discussions with the CFL did not ultimately lead to a collaboration, the effort reinforced our belief and commitment to developing the XFL for international spring football. We look forward to seeing everyone for kickoff in spring of 2023.”

We’ve said that the XFL was most likely looking towards a 2023 season, regardless of the outcome, and now it’s confirmed. The XFL has even updated their banners across social media.

A STATEMENT FROM THE CFL REGARDING THE XFL

TORONTO — The Canadian Football League (CFL) released the following statement on Wednesday:

“Our talks with the XFL, exploring the potential for collaboration and innovation, have been positive and constructive.

While we remain open to finding new ways to work together in the future, we and our XFL counterparts have jointly decided to not pursue any formal arrangements at this time.

We at the CFL are now squarely focused on preparing for August 5th and the start of our  2021 regular season, which will culminate December 12 with the playing of the 108th Grey Cup in Hamilton, Ontario.

We are looking forward to this year and  a bright future for our league.”
