Taylor Heinicke Sees NFL Action vs. Carolina, May Start on SNF

Taylor Heinicke has had quite the journey over the past several years. After being signed and cut by multiple practice squads, he joined the XFL for its inaugural season. Heinicke served as a backup QB for the St. Louis BattleHawks, but did not get an opportunity to actually play in an XFL game.

Several weeks ago, the QB was signed to the Washington Football Team’s practice squad, and soon after was elevated to the active roster. As Washington has struggled to find a reliable QB, Taylor was able to get some NFL action on Sunday, for the first time since 2018. In the team’s loss to Carolina, he came in and put on a show in the 4th quarter.

He finished the day with these stats: 12/19, 137yds, 1 TD | 102.3 QBR. Those are impressive numbers from any QB, let alone someone who hasn’t played in an NFL game for a few years. His 29 yard TD pass to J.D. McKissic was probably the most impressive play of the day:

With Alex Smith questionable for Sunday’s showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, there is a high chance we could see Taylor actually get the start. This would be a massive debut for him, as Washington’s playoff hopes are riding on this very game.

Right now, he remains the backup for Smith, but could very well be the starter come Sunday night. Do you think we’ll see Taylor Heinicke get the start? Can he lead the WFT to the playoffs? Let us know down in the comments below, or join the conversation on Discord!
