XFL kickoff is right around the corner, and the league is tying up all possible loose ends. According to Bloomberg, on of those loose-ends is protecting itself from improper sports betting. The XFL has signed a multi-year deal with Genius Sports to assist in monitoring these aspects of the game.
London-based Genius Sports, which has similar partnerships with golf’s PGA Tour and soccer’s English Premier League, will help the XFL build a so-called integrity program to guard against fixed games. As part of that, Genius, owned by private equity firm Apax Partners, will offer around-the-clock monitoring of pregame and live betting markets to detect unusual activity.
During the XFL’s centralized training camp this month, Genius will conduct betting-focused educational workshops with players, coaches and game officials.
Here’s a rundown of what the deal provides:
- Genius provides monitoring of all pre-game and live betting markets, including alerts and analysis of odds movements.
- At the XFL training camp this month in Houston, players, coaches and officials will go through integrity workshops conducted by Genius. During those sessions, Genius will help educate stakeholders on “best practices to prevent betting-related misconduct.” It will also provide information on how much betting is expected on games and work on processes for reporting and investigating integrity-related issues.
- Genius provides an online portal where staff and officials will be trained on league regulations and “the importance of integrity to the league’s future growth,” according to the XFL.
Since the United States Supreme Court lifted a ban on sports betting, 19 states (including DC) have passed laws allowing it. More states are expected to jump on board as well, and some think that the U.S. could become the biggest legal sports-betting market in the world.
Again, it’s great to see these types of announcements from the XFL. It shows, once again, this time around they are doing things the right way. They have the right people in the right places, making the right decisions.
